When Software Breaks the 6th Commandment

The sixth commandment simply states, “You shall not murder.” Can software systems violate this command? Apparently so.

Poorly written software that controlled an autonomous Uber car killed a biker in 2018. An NTSB report says the system “did not include consideration for jaywalking pedestrians.”

Bad software was also partly to blame for the downing of Boeing 747-MAX planes in 2018 and 2019 with 346 fatalities.

It is becoming increasily important for software developers to take seriously their responsibility before God for protecting lives. Gone are the days where sloppy software is good enough.
